Alpine

The scenic town of Alpine sits at the intersection of US 191 and US 180 high in the mountains of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The north-south path of US 191 is said to be route taken by Francisco Vasques de Coronado some 400 years ago as his expedition searched for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola.

Alpine resembles an Austrian village nestled amid beautiful views of pine-covered slopes. Hiking, camping, trout-fishing (Big Lake and Crescent Lake), cross-country skiing in winter and gazing at the breathtaking views are the main recreational activities in this region.

Pinetop-Lakeside

Pinetop-Lakeside is the busy hub of the White Mountain resort area, particularly in summer when Phoenix residents come up to escape the triple digit heat. The 1.6 million acres that make up the White Mountain Apache Reservation provide some of the best and most picturesque camping in Arizona.

The town plays host to thousands of skiers hitting the slopes at Sunrise Park Resort, the Southwest's largest ski area. Sunrise is located about 30 miles to the east of town. Pinetop-Lakeside is 190 miles north of Phoenix, and about a 4-hour drive. From Payson, it is 90 miles east or about a 1.5-hour drive. Fort Apache is located 4 miles southwest of Whitewater near Hwy 73. The fort features General Crook's headquarters and the Apache Cultural Center.
