Lodging and dining

Jun. 13, 2006 01:02 PM

Although your choices for hotel accommodations and restaurants are somewhat limited in Monument Valley, there are good places to stay and eat.

Places to stay

Goulding's Lodge is a mile off U.S. 163, across from the entrance to the Monument Valley Tribal Park. The rooms are motel-like, clean and comfortable, and their balconies offer spectacular views of Monument Valley.

The complex includes the Stagecoach Dining Room, an indoor, heated pool, a trading post with Native American crafts and tourist souvenirs, a small museum on the history of the Valley and movies filmed there and a small theater with a multimedia show on the valley.

Kayenta, which is an hour to the south, has a Hampton Inn, a Holiday Inn and a Best Western motel, and Mexican Hat, Utah, which is a half hour to the north, has a few budget motels. (435) 727-3231.

Mittenview Campground, which is part of the Monument Valley Tribal Park, has 100 sites with picnic tables, an RV dump station and restrooms with coin-operated showers. Services are limited during the winter.

Goulding's Campground, which is three miles off U.S. 163, has full RV hookups, cable TV, a heated indoor swimming pool, a laundromat, restrooms with showers and a playground. Services are limited during the winter.

Places to eat

The Stagecoach Dining Room at Goulding's Lodge has American food and Navajo tacos and offers diners great views of Monument Valley through its picture windows.

The Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, is located inside the tribal park's visitors center and operates during the summer.

Try a Navajo taco, a deep-fried pastry like a popover covered with beef or chicken, beans, lettuce and tomatoes. Buy one at either restaurant or, during the summer months, from vendors lining the entrance road to the tribal park.

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the Navajo Reservation.
