On March 4, 2009, the 7th annual Workplace Excellence Awards took place at the Westin La Paloma, hosted by Tucson Newspapers and the Society for Human Resource Management of Greater Tucson (SHRM-GT). Over 130 companies were nominated for best practices in Human Resources, but only seven companies walked away winners. Cartoonist David Fitzsimmons of the Arizona Daily Star entertained the crowd as “animated” Master of Ceremonies. Keynote speaker Kip Havel, Director of Marketing and Public Relations from Spherion, shared results from their Emerging Workforce Study, which gave employers key information about recruiting and retaining the best talent in today’s economy. After the awards, the Bernard Hodes Group presented a workshop on social recruiting and career Web sites.
Our thanks to our generous event sponsors: Adecco, Bernard Hodes Group, CareerBuilder, Clifton Gunderson LLP, Core Technologies, FastPark & Relax, Hughes Federal Credit Union, Pima Community College, Sunquest, The Art Institute of Tucson, Tucson Newspapers, and University of Phoenix.
The Bocker-Meza Award has been retained. This award debuted in 2005, in honorof the founders of the event, Eve Bocker and Kristyn Meza. The Bocker-Meza Innovation Award recognizes the exceptional HR practices of a small company with no official Human Resources department.
New this year! The Best Practices and Grand Prize Awards have been revamped. Following the SHRM National model, the following awards have been added:
- Innovative Business Solutions Award Recognizing a Human Resources department that successfully develops an innovative and progressive solution to a new or ongoing organizational challenge.
- Strategic HR Organizational Leadership Award Recognizing a Human Resources department that plays a leadership role in driving an organization's performance and reputation through the application of technology and business knowledge, and the ability to attract and retain a highly motivated and qualified workforce.
- Competitive Workforce Award Recognizing a Human Resources department that successfully responds to key workforce trends in a changing economic climate.
- HR Partner Award In recognition of the efforts of past co-chairs Laurie Becker and Brenda Baca-Carper, this award recognizes the HR service providers who work hand in hand with HR practitioners in implementing their HR strategies. The HR Partner Award goes to a firm that demonstrates a high level of service quality in creating effective and innovative solutions for their clients.
Individual Recognition Awards include:
- HR Leader of the Year Award Recognizing an HR Manager or Director who plays a pivotal and strategic people management role in their organization. This award recognizes those with a demonstrated track record of excellence in HR leadership. One or more specific examples are required to demonstrate the individual’s achievements or contributions and their impact on the organization.
- HR Professional of the Year Award The purpose of this award is to identify and recognize a Human Resource professional who is a positive role model having made significant contributions(s) to the profession, his/her organization and/or SHRM-GT. A significant contribution may include something innovative, service connected, creative, etc. As an added bonus, winners of the HR Leader and HR Professional of the Year Awards will be automatically put forward as a nominee for the Judith Krebs, PHR Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award, one of the most prestigious individual awards in the field of human resources in Arizona. The Judith Krebs, PHR Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes the contributions of a human resource professional that has gone over and above the norm in volunteering services in the advancement of the profession AND will also receive a one-year membership in the Society for Human Resource Management of Greater Tucson.
The Workplace Excellence Award program was established in 2002 to recognize and highlight the best human resources and business practices of Southern Arizona’s most progressive companies and to reinforce the fact that talented employees are a company’s biggest asset. Now in its 7th year, over 200 Tucson companies have been honored as a Finalist or Award winner of this most prestigious HR event in Southern Arizona.
